FREMANTLE/PERTH, AUSTRALIA

Nicknamed Freo by the locals, Fremantle is friendly and welcoming, eclectic and eccentric. Located in Western Australia on the Swan River, it is a cosmopolitan city with a hippy-vibe featuring fabulous artisanal food, handcrafted beers, quirky music and a lively music and arts scene. Known for its Victorian architecture, maritime history and one-time role as a British penal colony, it is also a gateway to Perth, home to enchanting parks, beaches and a Mediterranean-like climate.

Day 02 - Jurien Bay, Australia

ARRIVE – MORNING

DEPART – EVENING

Jurien Bay, Australia

Though surrounded by several inland national parks and reserves, a main draw of the Western Australian coastal town of Jurien Bay is its marine park, a hot spot for swimming, snorkeling, diving and other water sports. The park’s extensive network of limestone reefs and shallow lagoons provides the perfect meeting place for sea lions, dolphins and a variety of colorful fish. Within the park are dozens of ecologically important islands where rare and endangered animals make their home.

The Abrolhos Islands beckon with beguiling vistas. The stretch of 122 reef-surrounded isles and atolls sits in the Indian Ocean, about 37 miles west of the Western Australian town of Geraldton. A magnet for nature lovers, divers and snorkelers, the islands host large colonies of seabirds and marine mammals, including dolphins and sea lions. The area’s beauty belies the infamous 17th-century shipwreck and mutiny of the Dutch East India company’s Batavia that turned an island into a graveyard.

More than half the island is a national park containing species of flora and fauna found nowhere else in the world. The most noticeable local is the red crab. There are more than 100 million of these vividly hued creatures living on the forest floor. Christmas Island’s unique population blends Asian and European influences from the Australian mainland. A visit here is a diverse cultural experience that features numerous temples, local festivals and diverse cuisine.
