Day 03 - ILHA GRANDE & PARATI, BRAZIL

Literally meaning “Big Island,” Ilha Grande is a natural treasure, virtually untouched by humans. One of the last protected remnants of the Atlantic Rainforest, it is home to a rich and diverse ecosystem, including some of the largest remaining populations of endangered species in the world. The surrounding waters are also protected, so it’s possible to see tropical fish, penguins and whales all swimming together in harmony. Largely undeveloped, there are no roads, let alone cars, on Ilha Grande, but hikers have a choice of sixteen jungle trails that wind through tropical forests, alongside pristine waterfalls and up majestic mountain peaks.

A pedestrian-friendly historic center boasting beautifully preserved colonial architecture, cobbled lanes, and horse-drawn carts is among the many charms of Parati (also spelled Paraty), situated on Brazil’s Costa Verde. Surrounded by a backdrop of steep, jungle-clad mountains and a bay sprinkled with myriad islands, Parati is tentatively listed for UNESCO World Heritage recognition. The town’s many attractions include an 18th-century church built in the baroque style and well worth a look.

The centuries-old town of São Francisco do Sul is situated on an island of the same name, overlooking Babitonga Bay, in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. Founded by the French and colonized by the Portuguese, the city boasts beautiful beaches and a charming historic waterfront lined with colorful colonial buildings and cobbled lanes. Nearby Acaraí State Park, part of the Atlantic Forest, is home to a wealth of flora and fauna, including the curious-looking tamandua, a type of anteater.

Exclusive luxury casinos, hotels, restaurants and nightclubs lure many visitors, but the resort city also offers galleries, a popular handicraft market, colonial architecture, and the historic lighthouse for those looking for simpler pleasures. Sun worshipers enjoy over thirty miles of beaches stretched along the peninsula.

Fares listed are cruise-only, per person in US dollars based on double occupancy and do not include taxes, fees and port charges, which vary by departure. Available on new bookings when booked by April 30, 2019.

Each Crystal Endeavor itinerary balances days at sea with scheduled ports of call, and is intentionally designed to be flexible, allowing the Captain and his team of experts to incorporate unplanned “expedition days” when favorable weather conditions invite the opportunity for uncommon discovery. The Expedition Team will maintain a keen eye so that if an opportunity arises, is permitted and conditions allow, the Captain will attempt to position the vessel accordingly. The order of expedition calls/stops and/or itineraries may change due to weather/sea conditions or permit specifications. At all times, itineraries and ports of call are subject to the Captain’s sole discretion. Zodiac use and/or landings, wildlife sightings and wilderness highlights on any itinerary cannot be guaranteed. Kindly note that children under the age of 6 are not permitted aboard the Zodiacs. Use of submersible, complimentary marina equipment and helicopter is based on each destination’s local rules and regulations and in the sole discretion of the Captain.
