Fusing the vitality of a modern metropolis with the stately elegance of yesteryear, Tokyo is truly unique. From the timeless beauty of the Meiji Shrine to the glittering Ginza district and impressive Tokyo Tower, this international giant is a complex blend of East and West. Houses of wood and paper stand beside towering steel skyscrapers, while kimono-clad women stroll beside teenagers who have created a fashion all their own.

Day 02 - Shingu, Japan

SHINGU, JAPAN

A small coastal town of 30,000, Shingu is home to Kumano Hayatama Taisha Shrine, a UNESCO-designated treasure and one of three sacred sites along the ancient pilgrimage routes of Kumano Kodo, leading to and from Shingu. The striking red and white architecture has called to pilgrims for centuries and continues to leave travelers with a sense of awe in this tranquil setting. Less tranquil pursuits can be found in the Doro-kyo Gorge, where rafting and boating and exploring the rock formations will thrill your inner adventurer.

As it has been for centuries, Osaka remains a city of commerce, one of the original Japanese towns at the core of a developing society that grew around trade with China. Although the nature of the city hasn’t changed, it is presently undergoing an architectural revolution with a dazzling display of gleaming skyscrapers. Its prime geography makes it an excellent gateway to famed locales – including the sacred site of Kyoto and the majestic tranquility of Nara.

HIMEJI, JAPAN

Both a designated national treasure and UNESCO World Heritage Site, Himeji Castle presides over this capital of the Harima Province in stately white elegance. Nearby Kokoen Gardens cover the area formerly occupied by imperial samurai, and Shoshazan Engyoji Temple atop Mount Shosha attracts pilgrims from around the world. Together, these picturesque sites shape the past and present of one of the most important cities in the Kansai region.

A slice of small town living along the coast, Uwajima holds a proud history. It’s home to one of only twelve extant castles from the Edo Period, and one of the main pearl producing communities in Japan. Visit a local pearl farm to learn the secrets of the fine pieces, and explore further into the rural community for an authentic glimpse into daily life.

Mount Sakurajima poses an imposing image upon arrival to Kagoshima, but don’t let the active volcano that presides across the bay fool you. Kagoshima has been voted Japan’s friendliest city, with a climate to match the warmth of its residents – and the heat of Mount Sakurajima. This tropical environment fosters a rich agriculture and aquaculture that produces distinct cuisine and famously high-quality ingredients. The nearby Chiran Samurai Residences and Gardens offer a glimpse into the legendary warriors of 250 years ago.

Fairytales seem to come to life in the towering forests of Yakushima Island, where Japanese cedars thousands of years old create a hauntingly beautiful canopy. The largest of the Satsunan chain islands, Amami entices visitors to its rugged coastline with expansive white sand beaches that lead to cobalt seas and vibrant coral reefs in one direction, and to spectacular mangroves and highland cloud forest in the other. An island at the southernmost point of Kagoshima, Yoron is a tropical paradise with a complex culture. Despite its proximity to Kagoshima, Yoron sports clear influences from nearby Okinawa, and a beautiful harmony between the old and new. Besides the spectacularly blue waters that beckon to swimmers, Yoron’s proudest site is the Folk Village, which preserves the ancient ways of crafting and creating to continue the practices for generations to come.

Sea life is celebrated here, as Motobu is home to some of Japan’s best beaches and swimming areas, as well as Churaumi Aquarium, the world’s largest private aquarium. Comprising more than 204,5000 square feet, Churaumi is filled with majestic creatures from the deep, including giant whale sharks, bull sharks, manta rays, and thousands of tropical and deep-water fish. Head to Emerald Beach for infinite views of the macrocosm of the aquarium in the ocean beyond.

A cosmopolitan hub full of energy, Naha is the capital of the Okinawa prefecture, boasting influences of ancient Japanese traditions and more recent evidence of international visitors. Explore the urban jungle of Kokusai-Dori’s shopping and dining, including the fusion cuisine that is unique to Okinawa, evolved from decades of western occupation (taste the taco rice, champura and soki soba). Naminoue Shrine offers a glimpse into Okinawan mythology, while Gokokuji Temple tells dramatic tales of controversial settlers.

Day 13 - Kerama-Shoto Islands, Japan

The seas surrounding these islands, located about 20 miles from Okinawa, are a window to the wonders below, astoundingly transparent and reflecting nearly neon hues in the sunlight. Beneath these waters is a snorkeler’s playground, with sea turtles swimming along the coral reefs among the hundreds of endemic species here. Watch for migrating humpback whales who also favor the warm waters among the islands for their annual breeding grounds.

Part of the Okinawa prefecture, this tropical haven is home to some of Japan’s most breathtaking beaches, ideal starting points for snorkeling along the coral reefs. And while aquatic adventures of most any kind are a centerpiece of Miyako-jima’s charm, exploration along the cape, into the wetlands and botanical gardens, and to the vast sugarcane fields is also an enlightening experience.

Dive into the welcoming waters of Tsuki-ga-hama, a crescent-shaped expanse of golden sands outlined in some of Japan’s most beautiful coral reefs. This is one of few wide-open spaces on Irimote-jima Island, as the untamed wild jungles cover much of its remaining territory. That jungle is permeated by meandering rivers, ideal for kayaking and other explorations, making this wild frontier a playground for nature lovers.

At 20,000 tons, the all-suite Crystal Endeavor is the world’s largest and most spacious luxury expedition yacht, equally boasting some of the largest, most spacious suites in all of expedition cruising.

Fares listed are cruise-only, per person in US dollars based on double occupancy and do not include taxes, fees and port charges, which vary by departure. Available on new bookings when booked by June 30, 2019.

Each Crystal Endeavor itinerary balances days at sea with scheduled ports of call, and is intentionally designed to be flexible, allowing the Captain and his team of experts to incorporate unplanned “expedition days” when favorable weather conditions invite the opportunity for uncommon discovery. The Expedition Team will maintain a keen eye so that if an opportunity arises, is permitted and conditions allow, the Captain will attempt to position the vessel accordingly. The order of expedition calls/stops and/or itineraries may change due to weather/sea conditions or permit specifications. At all times, itineraries and ports of call are subject to the Captain’s sole discretion. Zodiac use and/or landings, wildlife sightings and wilderness highlights on any itinerary cannot be guaranteed. Kindly note that children under the age of 6 are not permitted aboard the Zodiacs. Use of submersible, complimentary marina equipment and helicopter is based on each destination’s local rules and regulations and in the sole discretion of the Captain.
