Holiday Wishes

On an epic Antarctic holiday, observe the dramatic display presented by Mother Nature and her creatures, which include orcas, fin and humpback whales, and all three species of brushtail penguins – gentoo, Adélie and chinstrap. Prepare for extraordinary adventure with four days of discovery on the Antarctic Peninsula, and possible navigation close to Cape Horn on our final day at sea.

Visit Elephant Island, the historic site where Ernest Shackleton’s crew was marooned – and saved – in 1916; and the South Shetland Islands, where all wildlife is found in the approximately 3 percent of land not covered in ice, along the shores. Spend an indulgent Christmas holiday aboard your luxury expedition yacht, and ring in the New Year with grand explorations of the Antarctic Peninsula and its complex, snow-covered terrain.

Itinerary

Day 01 - USHUAIA, ARGENTINA

EMBARK – PM

DEPART – 6 PM

USHUAIA, ARGENTINA

Ushuaia lies on the triangular-shaped island of Tierra del Fuego. While Ferdinand Magellan was exploring the straits between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in 1520, he was amazed by the smoke and fires which seemed to appear at every turn. These fires, kept continuously alight by the Yaghan and Ona Indians, became the inspiration for the name “Tierra del Fuego,” Land of Fire.

Day 02 - Cruising the South Atlantic Ocean

Day At Sea

Days at sea are an indulgent invitation to take full advantage of Crystal Endeavor’s luxurious amenities and services, from pampering interludes at the Crystal Life Spa & Salon or invigorating work-outs in the state-of-the-art fitness center to wine tastings, culinary presentations, lectures on art and history, or even a date with Lady Luck at the Resorts World at Sea Casino. Of course, the real thrill remains the opportunity for wildlife sightings with our Expedition Team keeping an eye out for nature’s wonders in addition to leading enriching presentations and conversational lectures unique to each destination.

Day 03 - WEST POINT ISLAND & SAUNDERS ISLAND, FALKLAND ISLANDS

ARRIVE – Morning

DEPART – Afternoon

West Point Island, Falkland Islands

Once known as Albatross Island due to the thousands of birds that nest here, this privately-owned island (in the Napier family since 1879) boasts spectacular scenery and impressive wildlife. The highest cliffs in the Falklands are here, and the rocky ledges near the “Devil’s Nose” promontory are where black-browed albatross and rockhopper penguins make their home. Magellanic penguins burrow in the harbor area, and whales, fur seals and occasional sea lions may be seen in surrounding waters.

ARRIVE – Afternoon

DEPART – Late Night

Saunders Island, Falkland Islands

Dramatic shorelines provide sweeping vistas of the second largest offshore island in the Falklands, home to wetlands and permanent lakes, sand dunes and steep cliffs. Recognized as an Important Bird Area, king, magellanic and gentoo penguins all breed here, as do rockhoppers – small sturdy birds who enchant all who witness a veritable “march of the penguins” as they climb rocky coastal walls to their nesting sites.

Day 04 - Port Stanley, Falkland Islands

ARRIVE – Morning

DEPART – Late Night

Port Stanley, Falkland Islands

Stanley is the capital of the Falkland Islands – an archipelago long of importance to both scientists and seaman located some 350 miles east of Tierra del Fuego, 1,000 miles north of Antarctica and, as the locals claim, a mere 8,000 miles from Britain. Explore the Historic Dockyard Museum with galleries dedicated to maritime exploration, Antarctic heritage and the 1982 Falklands War. See the whalebone arch near Christ Church Cathedral, and look for magellanic penguins gathering at Gypsy Cove.

Day 05 - Cruising the South Atlantic Ocean

Day 06 - Elephant Island, South Shetland Islands

ARRIVE – Afternoon

DEPART – Evening

Elephant Island

Named for the elephant seals early explorers spotted on its shores, this rugged, ice-covered island earned its place in history for the role it played in the 1916 survival of explore Ernest Shackleton’s crew of 22 after the loss of his ship, the Endurance.

Day 07-08 - Cruising Weddell Sea

Day At Sea

Breathtakingly scenic with iconic tabular icebergs, glaciers and expansive ice shelves – and renowned for its great expedition history – the nutrient-rich waters in this rugged sea hug the Antarctic Peninsula attracting extraordinary wildlife. Penguin colonies include Adélie, chinstrap, gentoo and more. Here is where crabeater and leopard seals may be seen, and where minke, humpback, blue and orca whales come to feed, as do kelp gulls, cape and giant petrels, skuas and numerous other seabirds.

Day 09 - South Shetland Islands, Antarctica

ARRIVE – Morning

DEPART – Evening

South Shetland Islands, Antarctica

Boasting extraordinary scenery and wildlife, this archipelago is about 75 miles north of the Antarctic Peninsula, separated by the Bransfield Strait. Notable islands here include King George Island, home to international research stations; Elephant Island, renowned as the spot where 22 crew from Shackleton’s “Endurance” were stranded; and Deception Island, the flooded caldera of a submerged volcano, once a base for sealers and whalers. Adélie, chinstrap, gentoo and macaroni penguins breed here.

Day 10-13 - Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica

ARRIVE – Morning

DEPART – Evening

Antarctic Peninsula

Extending from the northern-most reaches of the Antarctic mainland, this 800-mile-long mountain range of ice and islands jutting into the Weddell Sea on approach to the Drake Passage, is the Antarctica of dreams. The most accessible part of the Great White Continent, here is where iconic tabular icebergs provide mesmerizing vistas, and where seals, seabirds, and chinstrap and Gentoo penguins make their home. Zodiac adventures and landings reveal the wonder of this pristine and captivating region.

Day 14-15 - Cruising the Drake Passage

Day At Sea

This 600-mile-wide body of water between South America’s Cape Horn and the Antarctic Peninsula is where the Atlantic, Pacific and Southern oceans converge, and where unimpeded westerly winds aid the flow of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current – a huge volume of water about 600 times the flow of the Amazon River. Seabirds, notably wandering, royal and light mantled sooty albatross, as well as southern giant petrels, follow ships making the crossing and whales might also be seen.
